We're a day late but happy Bat Appreciation Day for yesterday!
New Zealand has 2 species of bat - the long-tailed bat and the lesser short-tailed bat - and they are our only native land mammals. The short-tailed bat is especially unique in that it often forages and hunts on the ground. Sadly this make it extra susceptible to predation by the non native mammals found here such as stoats, ferrets and weasels, and both bat species are considered Threatened or At Risk.
Have you been lucky enough to spot any in the wild or had any close encounters?
